Bringing Soaringwords to Your School

Soaringwords programs deliver meaningful, authentic, tangible and positive social action experiences for school communities grades K-12 and colleges to enjoy. All of our initiatives benefit ill and hospitalized children in the U.S.

Soaringwords informal educational experiences include 12 months of language and creative arts curricula and discussion guides that result in critical reflection to make the learning relevant for each participant; and hands-on service activities for schools of all ages. We have shared Soaringwords with public, private and parochial schools nationwide. The programs can last 1 hour to 2, 3 or 5 hours. Our signature event is the decoration of SoaringQuilts® and SoaringPillows® to donate to hospitalized kids.

The Soaringwords social action modules are presented as part of a larger issue -- 18% of children are seriously ill in this country – so the community knows that what they are doing is meaningful and needed. Soaringwords’ success is fueled by volunteer programs where students can do something fun & meaningful to make an ill child feel loved and supported.

The Soaringwords curricula and hands-on social action experiences foster community bonding as participants help each other. The projects become a powerful way for your community to be doing something meaningful together. Some students will gravitate towards SoaringAuthors, SoaringPoets, and SoaringStories while others will favor SoaringArtists, SoaringMurals, and SoaringHiaku. Other students have relevant experience in their families with illness. The Soaringwords discussion exercises and hands-on activities are powerful connectors where everyone discovers that they have something valuable to contribute to help ill children feel loved and supported. When the Soaringwords projects are created it will encourage all of the participants to internalize the values that “we are all responsible for each other.” It also significantly enhances the participants’ self-esteem as they “pay it forward.”

Shares inspiring turn-key programs. Soaringwords provides an easy to implement program (community partners will not have any extra work coordinating the logistics or managing the project). SoaringQuilts and SoaringPillows, SoaringMurals, hospital visits and dozen of activites through out the year.

Organization History and Mission:
Soaringwords provides relevant and meaningful programs that engage communities and gives them an opportunity to “pay it forward” in their community by supporting critically ill children. Each year, it is estimated that 18% of all children in the U.S. suffer from chronic illness. (Source: American Academy of Pediatrics). This means that each year 22 million children and their families and friends, potentially 66 million people in all, face the challenges of catastrophic illness. Soaringwords provides in-person and online support that boosts self-esteem and helps reduce isolation.

Soaringwords’ programs empower communities to embrace ill children and families and inspire them to “Never give up!” Lisa Buksbaum started the organization after three experiences
with death and illness in her family. Within a ten-month period, her only sibling died suddenly, her dad had his second bout of cancer and was hospitalized for several months, and her oldest child was catastrophically ill. Today, her dad and son are recovered. She has devoted the past six years to launching Soaringwords, a non-profit that inspires ill children and families to heal.
