Bringing Soaringwords to Your Community

Soaringwords programs deliver meaningful, authentic, tangible and positive social action experiences for your community to enjoy. All of our initiatives benefit ill and hospitalized children in the U.S. and in Israel.

Share Soaringwords with your synagogue today.
Soaringwords has hands-on social action experiences that can be shared in the classroom, in the sanctuary, in the social hall, in the Religious school, in adult education classes. There are Bikkur Cholim curricula as well as community-wide team-building social action/mitzvah activities that everyone will enjoy.

These experiences can be incorporated into your community’s:
• Social Action committee and outreach programs/Mitzvah day
• Bar and bat-mitzvah social action project (for the whole school and at the actual celebration). See flier.
• Teen programs • Singles programs • Youth groups
• Family programs • Israel Fairs
• Israel Missions
• Seniors programming • Women’s programming
• Scholar in residence/keynote inspirational speaker/author in residence

Soaringwords informal Jewish educational experiences include bikkor cholim (healing the sick) and tikkun olam (healing the world) curricula; discussion guides that result in critical reflection to make the learning relevant for each participant; and hands-on service activities for congregants of all ages. We have shared Soaringwords with over 250,000 people in synagogues, youth groups, JCCs, schools, churches, and corporations nationwide.

Soaringwords programs facilitate the experience of Jewish values first-hand and generate strong emotional bonds with peers. The Soaringwords social action modules are presented as part of a larger issue -- 18% of children are seriously ill in this country – so the community knows that what they are doing is meaningful and needed. Soaringwords’ success is fueled by volunteers who want to do something fun & meaningful to make an ill child feel loved and supported.

The Soaringwords curricula and hands-on social action experiences foster community bonding as participants help each other. The projects become a powerful way for your community to be doing something meaningful together, regardless of religious affiliations or level of observance. Some people are familiar with the Jewish sources and text…. others have relevant experience in their families with illness. Some are better artists, others more proficient in Hebrew. The Soaringwords discussion exercises and hands-on activities are powerful connectors where everyone discovers that they have something valuable to contribute to help ill children feel loved and supported. When the Soaringwords projects are created to benefit hospitalized children in Israel, it will encourage all of the participants to internalize the Jewish values that “all Jews are responsible for each other.” It also brings all of the participants closer to their heritage as they write their names and messages in Hebrew.

Organization History and Mission:
Soaringwords provides relevant and meaningful programs that engage communities and gives them an opportunity to “pay it forward” in their community by supporting critically ill children. Each year, it is estimated that 18% of all children in the U.S. suffer from chronic illness. (Source: American Academy of Pediatrics). This means that each year 22 million children and their families and friends, potentially 66 million people in all, face the challenges of catastrophic illness. Soaringwords provides in-person and online support that boosts self-esteem and helps reduce isolation.

Soaringwords’ programs empower communities to embrace ill children and families and inspire them to “Never give up!” Lisa Buksbaum started the organization after three experiences
with death and illness in her family. Within a ten-month period, her only sibling died suddenly, her dad had his second bout of cancer and was hospitalized for several months, and her oldest child was catastrophically ill. Today, her dad and son are recovered. She has devoted the past six years to launching Soaringwords, a non-profit that inspires ill children and families to heal.

SoaringBridges to Israel links youth around the world to hospitalized children in Israel. This initiative was launched two weeks after the Passover bombing in 2002 . It has supported 11,000 hospitalized children in Israel.
